Praise to the man

Today we blessed Matthew in church. He was wearing this tiny little white suit that I bought off of eBay and his calick was slicked down to decrease the bedhead look that is his constant companion.

Blessing a baby is unique to gospel ordinances because it isn't a saving ordinance. It is one of those bonus blessings--one that you are so grateful for as a parent--the perfect way to welcome a new person into a mortal life. You take this tiny person in a white suit and bless him with all the things that you want him to become. Good, virtuous, curious, hard-working...protected in some way from the bad things and predisposed to all the good ones. Basically you bless him with a lifetime of everything that makes a life well-lived.

I was thinking about this an hour ago when I checked my e-mail and saw a simple message from an old friend in Philadelphia: "Our beloved prophet Gordan B. Hinkley died today." That was it. So perfectly said. He was ours and so beloved. But hard to think that he's dead. But so excited for him. But wonder how the world will be without him. But so grateful for all that he was able to do and be.

Our prophet. Good, virtuous, curious, hard-working...

Well-lived. Everything that makes a life well-lived.

I loved this post Shelley. I especially like the thought of a bonus ordinance. Wish we could have been there for it. Love you
