After the storm, comes the calm (sort of a travelog...I wanted to warn you ahead of time)

We are beat, but in the best way. We have not slept in our own bed in over two weeks and today we unabashedly took a TWO hour Sunday nap. Madeline was beat, too. I put her down for a nap in just a diaper, fresh from the shower and squeaky clean, and I came in two hours later to a totally naked baby, blissfully asleep in the afternoon sun, her diaper flopped open next to her crib. The inevitable has happened, the fear of all parents: the baby is no longer a baby and has learned how to take off her diaper at will. To quote "The Drowsy Chaperone", she's "an accident waiting to happen."

Already this entry is scattered. Just like our living room. Might as well keep going.

So. Matt finished his finals 19 days ago. Then there was a frantic few days of furious thesis writing. He turned his thesis in on the morning that we went to the Poconos for a five day escapade in the mountains with our fellow Whartonites. There were five families there, crammed into a cabin by a lake. We stayed up late, buoyed on by excess calories and wore ourselves out by alternately being lazy and active (we hiked to a beautiful waterfall one day that Matt almost, but not quite, jumped into. I think he was encouraged by his gallant swim in an icy lake the day before). The day we drove home from the mountains we flew to Charlotte for a whirlwind three days of trying to picture our future in Charlotte suburbia. I know sitting in a car driving around town shouldn't be tiring but it was. Then we came home, cleaned and washed our clothes, picked Matt's family up from the airport and the next day Matt graduated, we had a picnic and cheered him on. Then we touristed in Philly, drove to DC, went on a road trip to Ocean City, Maryland where we rented a beach house, stayed up late and ate too much food, drove back to DC for David's (Matt's brother) graduation, ate more food, stayed up late laughing, etc. This morning we left DC at 6:03 a.m. so that we could make it church to teach.

And now we are home in Philly with a messy house and no clean underwear and we are tired and happy(or we will be when the crabbiness subsides)and we are the proud parents of a baby that has now acquired the skills to become an exhibitionist. Life is good.

The next post might be more interesting. You better check just to make sure.

next post will be interesting implies that this post was less than that. not so. even in travel log land you have a gift. i love the mcconkies and their ability to gather. loved seeing bex and levi for a split second because the festivities brought them South, and can't wait to see that e'er growing little Madeline. When do you become Charlatans (not funny)?

Yeah, Shelley, even in travel log land you have a gift. I think Hemingway said not to send these types of things, and Heingway to the birds, I'm glad you did. Even if he didn't say that, I wanted to think of someone credible so you knew how strongly I felt this. So strongly I'm disagreeing with someone we usually agree with. And thanks for not being ticked that we got in your car at 6:03 that morning and promptly left the rest to you. We both woke up a litte embarassed when we realized we didn't offer to help or pay tolls or anything. Sorry and thanks for not recounting THAT part of the past couple of weeks.

A whirlwind of a month. I was exhausted after a week. I can't imagine a month. I think that Sunday I took a good long nap, or maybe even 2. It was great to see you guys.

I have given up hope that you will ever post again.

Rebecca, don't give up hope. The last line in the post alludes to the 'next post' being more exciting, and to check to find out. Shelly is so supremely honest, that she'll come back to us eventually. Where are you now Shelly? The Carolinas?
