The best...

Way to spend 20 cents:24 pack of Crayola crayons (pronounced "cren" because I'm from Utah). I am incredulous that they can make them so cheap.

Thing I've eaten this week: Roasted tomato soup. So good. Take a roasting pan full of tomatoes from your garden (a couple of pounds or so), cover in butter, fresh ground pepper and kosher salt and roast them with a medium onion and a few garlic cloves at 475 for about 15 minutes. Then add some basil leaves and a cup or so of sun-dried tomatoes in oil (the kind you buy at Costco). Roast another 10 minutes. Then pour the whole concoction in a pan, cover with plastic wrap and let it sit there awhile. Then add a cup or two of chicken broth, some cream if you have it and red pepper flakes until it has just the right amount of kick, then blend and simmer until it sings. Serve hot with chunks of fresh mozzarella (or feta) and shredded fresh basil.

Way to get the neighbors talking:Host a last-minute Pioneer Day Party and invite kids over to pull taffy, make stick cabins, etc. Dress them up (check out Matthew in the blue bonnet) and take them on a long walk around the neighborhood. Realize half way through the walk that you bear a striking resemblance to a group of fundamentalists out for a stroll....

So cute! Leave it up to you, Shelley, to get a great group together and have a fun celebration of a holiday that I pretty much forgot about (blame it on living on the other side of the country of Utah!). Sorry we missed it, but glad that you captured some memories with wonderful pictures (I love Matthew's bonnet).

You are making us really hungry- our tomatoes are just getting ripe enought to pick-we're definitely going to try this recipe along with some French bread. We love the pictures. Your party looks like it was a success. We loved talking to Maddy and hearing her version of the party and other happenings. Love, Mom and Dad

Are you kidding me? I never would've thought, or probably had the guts to host a pioneer day activity. You are one of a kind. That soup sounds delish - I"m going to try it.

I love the trek through the neighborhood with bonnets and the soup sounds wonderful. Our tomato plants seem to have dried up while we were on vacation. Our backyard smells like pizza between the shriveled tomatoes and the sun-warmed basil. Next year I will do a better job with my garden!

I like that you casually say "Pick delicious tomatoes from your organically grown garden." Um, so that means head over to Smith's right?

And I'm still not convinced roasted tomato soup is as good as microwaved cheese chunked mayo sandwiches. Now that's good eatin!

I miss my fundamentalist best friend.

Your soup sounds great but you lost me at "from your garden". We have struggled to even keep the flowers and grass alive in this heat! Your pioneer party is too funny. Matthew in a bonnet is definitely a keeper.
